Pictobiography of Bhuri Bai
Born in an ordinary Bhil family, Bhuri bai wanted to spend her life playing with her friends like all the children of her age would do, but due to her family conditions she started grazing animals at that tender age. Time passed, now Bhuri had grown up and was married off. She later moved to the big cities with her husband to work as a labourer. While working in several cities they came to Bhopal and this was the time when the construction of Bharat Bhavan was in progress and it was an opportunity to work here for a much longer time. One day something happened that changed Bhuribai's life.
The renowned painter J. Swaminathan was monitoring the construction of Bharat Bhavan, no one knew how Swaminathan saw Bhuri and out of nowhere asked her to make something on a paper. Bhuri was completely scared and did not have any clue as what to do with paper and pen. She thought “I have not seen this before. If I do something wrong then sir will be angry and what if they fire me from the work”. Wages were necessary, so she kept that paper and pen with herself for several days. He had asked her once or twice and she told him she will make something soon, but nothing was coming out. That day it was a no work day for us, she took out that paper and pen and made trees and sparrows that she had seen in her village. The next day she went to Swamiji, gave him that drawing she was scared so she quickly ran away from his room so that he doesn’t get angry with her. But destiny was doing its own work. Swamiji called her and said that you have made such a great picture. You will not work from now on. The moment he said this she was, as if a mountain had broken above her. If I do not work, what will I feed the children? While she was lost in her thoughts, Swamiji said that I will give you more money than wages for this work. Even after his assurance, her mind was more confident in doing labour work than drawings, whereas Swami ji was insisting her to do vice versa. Due to his constant motivation and inspiration, something strange happened within her. Society and government has given many honours and awards and also has given the opportunity to see the country and the world. She is forever grateful to the tradition and forefathers, by whose experiences she had found this expansion. The coming generations will also do this to protect the tradition. There is a similar desire.
